What “adaptogen” actually means

The term was coined in 1947 by Russian toxicologist Nikolai Lazarev to describe substances that increase the body’s non-specific resistance to stress without disrupting normal function. In 1969, pharmacologists Brekhman and Dardymov formalised three criteria a substance has to meet to be called an adaptogen:

  1. Non-specific. It helps the body resist a wide range of stressors (physical, chemical, biological) not just one.
  2. Normalising. It pushes function back toward baseline whether the body is over- or under-active. It does not just stimulate.
  3. Innocuous. It causes no significant disturbance to normal physiology at therapeutic doses.

By that definition, caffeine is not an adaptogen: it pushes one direction only and disturbs sleep, heart rate and gut motility. Most ginsengs, Rhaponticum carthamoides (Leuzea), Rhodiola rosea, Eleutherococcus senticosus (Siberian ginseng) and Red Root (Hedysarum neglectum) do qualify, with decades of published research behind them.

Why honey, not a capsule

Sublingual delivery, not gut delivery. A lozenge dissolves slowly under the tongue. Active compounds cross directly into capillaries through the oral mucosa, bypassing first-pass liver metabolism that destroys a significant fraction of orally swallowed plant extracts. This is the same logic behind sublingual B12 and CBD tablets.

Honey is the original delivery vehicle. Long before gelatin capsules, Russian and Central Asian herbal medicine used raw honey as a stable matrix for plant extracts. Honey preserves heat-sensitive compounds, masks bitterness, and acts as a mild anti-microbial. Our lozenges keep that pairing, modernised into a precise, portable format.

How adaptogens work in the body

Adaptogens are believed to act primarily on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the system that governs the body’s stress response and cortisol release. Rather than blocking cortisol or pushing adrenaline, adaptogens appear to modulate HPA activity: dampening over-reaction under acute stress, and supporting recovery between stress cycles. The result, in published trials, is improved physical endurance, faster recovery, better mental focus under load, and more stable energy across the day. Why this matters

If you have ever felt fine in the morning, fried by 3pm, and wired at midnight: that is HPA dysregulation. A working HPA axis lets you climb when you need to climb and come back down when you need to recover. Caffeine bypasses the system entirely and forces a one-way stimulant response. Adaptogens, in contrast, appear to help the axis re-learn its own rhythm: respond when stress arrives, return to baseline when it passes.
